If you’ve been paying any attention to the ‘Top Paid’ section of the App Store over the past month, Cut the Rope needs no introduction. After all, the physic-related puzzle title reached the 2 million sales mark after just three weeks of launch, becoming the second bona fide app phenomenon from publishers Chillingo since their Angry Birds title took over the world.

Considering Chillingo were recently acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) for just $20m, EA may have stumbled upon the bargain of the decade, and so have you – Cut the Rope offers hours of gameplay and costs just 79c. So what’s it all about to begin with, and can it really challenge Angry Bird’s App Store dominance?

Cut the Rope is focused on a cute green monster called Om Nom, who players must feed by cutting the rope (hence the title) holding Om Nom’s food at the optimum time, so that the candy falls into our hero’s mouth. Cutting the rope involves a quick swipe of the player’s finger, while an assortment of obstacles attempt to block and inhibit your path your ability to satisfy the ever-demanding gaping mouth of Om Nom.

During each ever-increasingly convoluted challenge, the rope swings from side to side, while three stars are present in every level to achieve a perfect rank and unlock new worlds. Perhaps it’s down to the prominent ‘refresh’ button that ensures quick replayability or the loving design of Om Nom, but not once during our playtime with Cut the Rope did we realise we were actually doing practical mathematics.

ALWAYS keep your candy safe – words to live by

Developers ZeptoLab also work hard to balance challenge and ease-of-use with exceedingly ingenious alterations to their quickly-established formula, throwing bubbles and even spiders into the mix across four worlds Cut the Rope has to offer – cardboard, fabric, foil and gift boxes, with new additions promised through forthcoming updates.

Simple to understand and difficult to put down, that the core mechanics of Cut the Rope are so easily demonstrated and new challenges provided with little difficulty spiking is no mean feat on the part of ZeptoLab. Coupled with a charming art style and imaginative gameplay mechanics, don’t surprised to see Cut the Rope reclaiming it’s App Store top spot in the day to come – Chillingo may have created another casual gaming classic.

Cut The Rope is available to download from the App Store for €0.79.
