Call of Duty: Black Ops reaches $1bn sales

This year’s video games Christmas number one, Call of Duty: Black Ops, has now crossed the $1bn sales threshold after less than two months on release.

Treyarch Studio’s Cold War-era shooter received $360m in sales on its first day of release, becoming the biggest entertainment launch in history after five days in the process. The title was ever the most pre-ordered video game of all time in the US.

“In all of entertainment, only Call of Duty and Avatar have ever achieved the billion-dollar revenue milestone this quickly,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard in a press statement.

“This extraordinary milestone was achieved because of the tens of millions of passionate Call of Duty players around the world.

Activision claim that more than 600m hours of gaming has been logged on Black Ops since its launch on November 9, while the average players player plays for 3 hours at a time.
