Beware the thaw: burst pipes and trecherous roads

The thaw is slowly starting in some, but not all, parts of the country. And it promises floods, burst pipes and more trouble on the roads.

The thaw is slowly starting in some, but not all, parts of the country. And it promises floods, burst pipes and more trouble on the roads.

Aside from the north and north west, where snow and sleet prevail, it’s time for the start of the thaw, with rain predicted across the country.

But while the thaw will be welcome by many, it threatens to cause trouble for some.

It’ll be warmer, but not that much. Met Eireann have warned that today may be the most hazardous day for travel since the bad weather first hit.

There’ll be rain, but it’ll be freezing rain which will make a highly dangerous combination when put together with the compacted snow and ice that has covered the country.

The rain could be heavy, leading to flooding, and there’s a risk of black ice.

Also, as the thaw comes, the inconvenience of frozen pipes may turn to the misery of burst pipes.

It’s not all bad news, though. Flights at Dublin Airport have resumed following the scheduled Christmas Day closure with a flight from New York the first plane to touch down at 5.20am. All other Irish airports are open today.

And Aer Lingus are using large longhaul planes for shorthaul trips in order to clear the backlog of flights caused by airport closures in the week leading up to Christmas Day. Ryanair are laying on extra flights.

There are still some flight cancelations across Europe, but far fewer than last week.
