The 171 members of this Facebook group will be delighted – Bear Grylls has decided to release the ‘ultimate survival tool’ to the App Store masses. Whether you’ve absent-mindedly wandered into a giant forest and have a fear of being eaten by wolves or you just enjoy an old-fashioned bear pun, the ‘Bear Essentials‘ promises to provide a lot more than the ‘Bear minimum’ until the sheer wealth of content is too much to ‘Bear’. It’s clever because his nickname is ‘Bear’ you see…

Anyways, even if you don’t know your *insert obscure scouting reference* from your *insert obscure scouting reference*, Bear’s Essentials guide is a formidably comprehensive purchase that makes you wonder why no app developers have really tried to corner this unique market until VEEMEE came along.

Consider the iPhone has apps for nearly every outdoor excursion (festivals, GPS), how did adventurers and outdoorsy beard-sporting iPhone gets by before now? Eaten by wolves, the lot of them.

Like most of Bear’s shows, the above pic created entirely through seamless CGI environments

The fact sheet regarding Bear’s app is an absolute monster. For your hard-earned €5.50 you receive the following: 18 chapters of advice, 3 mini-games, 35 illustrations, 40 clips, 100 photos, 30 quotes, a 90 question quiz, a compass, Bear’s fitness regime, survival light, Bear’s top 10 knots (calm your excitement!) and a weather predictor, which is clearly powered by magic. Literally, no sooner have you had a quick cursory glance over the options available, you’ll realise you’ve picked up one of the biggest bargains in the App Store to date.

Whether you’re a survalist novice or you have a luxurious beard, there’s something for every level of outdoorsman in this app. Bear himself has already described his offering as a “multi-media survival Swiss-army knife of an app” and in truth, Essentials has to rank as possibly one of the most helpful and useful apps on the iPhone or iPod Touch today.

It’s understandable that these days, any mobile app priced at over €5 can be a premium purchase and with that pricetag, many are hesistant to part with their cash. With Bear Essentials, you have a gold standard survival app that is not purely the reserve of outdoors expert, on the other hand it’s an app that will do its very best to create an expert out of you soon enough. Truly, a night among the stars without this release packed away on your handheld would be unbeara… no, we can’t say it!
