It’s fair to say that nobody could have expected what unfolded on a truly mad transfer deadline day yesterday. Check out the biggest movers and shakers here.

What a day that turned out to be. Fernando Torres’ move to Chelsea had been widely expected, but even the most deluded Liverpool fan could never have imagined that it would be Andy Carroll taking his place on Merseyside.

Liverpool and Chelsea were undoubtedly the biggest players on the last day of January; the Reds confirmed the signing of Ajax striker Luis Suarez, while also recouping £50 million for Fernando Torres from Premier League champions Chelsea. After a couple of years of relative penny-pinching compared to his early days, Roman Abramovich was back to his lavish best, splashing out over £76 million to assure Chelsea fans that he hasn’t given up on them yet.

As far as the Irish lads are concerned, Conor Sammon will get the chance to deliver on his undoubted promise in the Premier League with Wigan, while Blackpool seem to have got a bargain by snapping up Andy Reid for a cut-price £1 million. Hopefully, it will give Andy the platform to show that he deserves an international recall.

Another midfielder estranged from the international set-up and to be fair, estranged from life in general, Stephen Ireland finally sealed a loan move to Newcastle after early reports of a failed medical, while Bohemians striker Paddy Madden was snapped up by League One side Carlisle United for an undisclosed fee.
