Tesco have apologised and offered full refunds to customers after their online site began accidentally selling the upcoming Nintendo 3DS for over £60 less than its gaming rivals.

The glasses-free handheld console, set for release in Ireland on March 25, does not carry a RRP, though most online and high street stores have settled upon a £200-220/€250-270 asking price. Today, however, Tesco began offering the Aqua Blue 3DS model up for sale at just £157.60 – £40 cheaper than anywhere else, including the site’s £197.60 Cosmo Black 3DS model.

Video games sites and forum were abuzz about the heavily-discounted offer, which appeared to coincide with the British supermarket chain’s ‘20% Off Gaming’ offer, a deal which Tesco have since clarified applies to every console aside from the Nintendo 3DS.

“We are very sorry for the pricing error,” read a Tesco statement issued to gaming site Eurogamer this afternoon. “We have contacted the small number of customers affected to apologise and offer them a full refund.”

Surprisingly, as of this writing, Tesco have not yet amended the pricing error, though the Aqua Blue model is ‘temporarily out of stock’.
