Dublin manager Pat Gilroy believes there’s work to do despite their one-point victory over Kerry in Croke Park on Saturday night.
The Dubs remain top of the Allianz Football League Division 1 with full points from their three games so far.
In front of poor attendance of 23,720, Dublin continued their prolific start to the season putting three goals past the Kingdom; giving them 20 goals in their first seven games of the campaign. Goals win matches and Pat Gilroy believes that they have saved Dublin in recent weeks.
“They’ve been really saving our bacon,” Gilroy said.
An early second half dominance left Dublin up by four points entering the final 10 minutes, however, Kerry hit back with Colm Cooper leading the charge. The Kingdom hit four unanswered points to level going into to injury time. Facing a draw, or worse, Bernard Brogan intervened with the decisive point to spare Dublin’s blushes.
Kerry’s near comeback has left Gilroy with plenty to ponder for the upcoming fixtures.
“We really had ourselves in a very good position around 59, 60 minutes and then the last 10 minutes were very poor,” he said.
“We made elementary mistakes and it just wasn’t good enough. We really should have pushed on when we got three or four points ahead, we wouldn’t have been very happy the way we finished that game. We were lucky to get the win. I think they probably did enough to deserve the draw at least”
He continued, “We must have the worst defensive record now in the league, so we have a lot of work to do.”
