An overwhelming 87pc of all crimes against tourists in Ireland occur in Dublin, while more than one per day is subjected to a criminal act, according to a new report.

The Irish Tourist Assistance Service (ITAS) reports that more than 620 tourists sought help last year after being victims of crime with 361 cases in total, which included 19 people under the age of 16 and nine aged under 10 years old.

Young females, aged between 17-25, are the main target for criminals seeking to rob tourists in Ireland, it has emerged.

The most common times for these crimes to occur were when tourists were “sightseeing, shopping and generally relaxing in restaurants and cafes” particularly between 2-6pm.

The main crime is theft from the person (48pc), followed by theft from cars (11pc).  In total, more than €36,000 was taken from 186 tourists along with 171 passports and 145 national identity cards, 161 credit cards and 93 bank cards.
