In a note that appeared alongside Nintendo’s 2011 financial statement, the Japanese giants have confirmed that they are to launch a Wii follow-up in 2012.
The console, codenamed ‘Project Cafe’, is expected to be unveiled at Los Angeles’ annual video game expo, E3, this coming June. News of the Wii successor was first leaked by US video game monthly Game Informer, who cited numerous sources that third-party studios have been playing with development units for months.
It has been claimed that the new console will feature HD graphics to rival, if not surpass Nintnedo’s current hardware rivals, the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
More outlandish rumours also suggest that the new console, which may not include any ‘Wii’ branding whatsoever, will utilise controllers that features a 6.2″ HD screen.
Early whispers that Nintendo are planning a Wii price in May have since died down, however. For their 2011 financial report, the company have said that their handeld 3DS console has got off to a “smooth start”, with 3.6m units sold to date. The console was launched in European in the US in late March, following a Japanese release the month previous.
