Rockstar Games’ forthcoming crime caper L.A. Noire will span three Xbox 360 discs, according to the company’s product development VP Jeronimo Barrera.

“To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs,” Barrera told gaming website Kotaku.

In contrast, the Playstation 3 version of the game will require just one single-layer Blu-ray disc, while Barrera told the site that the title, which is heavily influenced by James Ellroy novels such as L.A. Confidential, offers 25-30 hours of gameplay.

The product development VP also cited the game’s revolutionary MotionScan technology for realistic facial movements as one of the main reasons for the excess discs. In contrast, the company’s Red Dead Redemption shipped on a single Xbox 360 disc in the same release window last year.

L.A. Noire was always going to be a massive game, from the size and detail of the world to the length of the cases, and of course, the sheer amount of MotionScan data required for the faces of over 400 actors in-game.”

“Since the game is built around the concept of progressing through individual cases from desk to desk, players on Xbox will find disc-swapping is hassle-free. In fact, players will only need to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases without interrupting the flow of the game.”

L.A. Noire reaches Irish stores on May 20 and is already considered a contender for game of the year.
