Hurricane Fly made it a ninth Grade 1 success with a simple win in the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown today.

The Willie Mullins-trained gelding hardly got out of second gear en route to a stylish win to follow up victory in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.

Sent off the 1/2 favourite at a rainy Co Kildare venue, Hurricane Fly was produced by Ruby Walsh hacking along coming round the home turn, and the bookies could have started paying out from that point.

Stablemate Thousand Stars ran on for second, with English challengers Binocular and Menorah well beaten off.

The Fly was later acclaimed by RTE commentator and Ruby’s father Ted as the best hurdler since Istabraq – and we know how good he was.
