If you’re planning your holidays you need to check your passport expiry date right away as backlogs at the Passport Office mount.
There are no fun and games to be had for holidaymakers who think they can renew their passports in jiffy, especially as the Passport Express service, which should only take up to ten days, taking between 11 and 13 days at the moment.
Requests made by post are currently taking between four and six weeks to be processed.
There’s a 13 per cent higher demand in passport requests than at the same time last year and a warning has be given from officials at the Passport Office to make requests well in advance.
Temporary staff have been recruited to work on the backlog in the office, according to Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore on RTE’s Morning Ireland.
The backlog, however, is expected to last until at least 3 June.
