The time for making a decision on whether or not you’re going to get a holiday in this year is upon us. JOE looks at some alternative trips to Italy.
By Robert Carry
While the likes of Spain, Turkey and Greece will no doubt be expecting their yearly influx of beach-bound tourists, Italy is providing a whole other option. We’ve tracked down five activity holidays on the Mediterranean peninsula you would otherwise never have thought of.
Kite/wind surfing holiday

There’s more to do on a beach than get your perve on – kite surfing being one option. Seven-night packages in the picturesque Talamone on the Tuscan Coast, which includes a crack at the sport, start from €342 per person.
Lessons take place on a number of cracking beaches while accommodation is in the Holiday Cottage Leonardo at Talamone Village. There are a number of other activities on the go in the area while the location means you’ll also be well positioned to explore nearby villages, towns and the expansive Maremma National Park.

Trans-Alpine train holiday

The Orient Express may swan around like it’s the only train holiday worth going on, but the associated price tag is a nightmare. An equally stunning and far more wallet friendly option is a holiday based around the route of the Bernina Express train.
It runs from Tirano in Italy to St Moritz in Switzerland, taking in cracking views of the Alps. You also get the option of a train connection from Bergamo airport to accommodation at the edge of the majestic Lake Como. It’s also a much more wallet friendly €196 per person.

You don’t have to be an Indiana Jones wannabe to get something out of this one. A six-night Archaeology holiday in Sorrento takes in included excursions to Pompeii, Herculaneum and a trip to Naples.
You get your own private guide that can fill you in on the archeology; but who can also tip the best cafes, bars and restaurants to hit up during your down time.
Prices start from €203 per person for the six nights.

If a train holiday sounds too laid back, then a hands-on Catamaran Sailing holiday in Sardinia might float your boat. If you see what I did there. Four-night packages from €204 per person include a three-day sailing course and an all-inclusive camping trip.
Also being on the Sardinian coast, you are virtually guaranteed great temperatures and the perfect breeze to accompany your sailing lessons.
