Bernard Dunne has proved he’s got what it takes to be a world boxing champion, but he’s not so sure if he could change a wheel.
For his latest project, the former WBA Super Bantamweight World champ, who retired from the ring last year, will be a coach and mentor of a group of 16-year-olds in a new 10-part RTÉ series to air this autumn called Ultimate Street Challenge.
He drives a car, so we set him our motoring questionnaire.
What was your first car, Bernard?
A four-litre Jeep Cherokee that I had in the States. I lived in LA where you needed to drive. Everyone drives big cars over there, and that’s what I ended up doing.
What made you chose your current set of wheels?
Because it’s a sponsored car I’ve been lucky enough t be given to drive! It’s an Opel Vectra.
How nifty are you at changing a wheel?
I have no idea. I’ve never had to change the wheel of any car I’ve had and I doubt I could do it.
What’s currently on your stereo?
Right now it’s The Coronas. I’m a fan of their music and I like the band themselves – they’re a good bunch of lads.. I got to meet them and play soccer with them and got to know what they’re like.
The perfect car with the perfect companion would be…?
Going for a long drive in an old Porsche 911. That’s the car. As for the companion, if I’m banned from saying my wife then it’d have to be Kenny Daglish. I’m a big Liverpool fan and a big admirer of Kenny.
I like the old ‘boot room’ mentality he has. With the amount of money he’s spent and 13 midfielders to pick from we’d better do well this season.
And the perfect journey…?
The journey home.
Obviously you’re a brilliant driver, but what trait in other drivers really grinds your gears?
I can’t stand people who keep touching their brakes for absolutely no reason. There’s no car in front of them but they still keep doing it.
Oh, and people who just pull into the side of the road and just stop, with a total lack of understanding as to what the indicator is for.
And somebody who drives up your arse. Someone does that and I’ll keep touching the brakes.
