Irish legend Paul McGrath has claimed that Richard Dunne’s performance against Russia today was better than any other Irish centre half in history – including himself!

Dunne was heroic in the 0-0 draw in Moscow, making vital interception after goal-line clearance (below) after health-risking sideline tackle as Giovanni Trapattoni’s fluky Ireland kept alive their hopes of qualifying for next year’s finals in Poland and Ukraine.

The performance – which ended with Dunne wearing a scrawled No 5 jersey after a replacement for his bloodied original couldn’t be found – prompted many to draw comparisons with the displays of McGrath during his career, most notably in the victory over Italy at the 1994 World Cup.

But McGrath believes he went one better, suggesting that it was better than any in history.

On Twitter, the legendary ‘Ooh Ah’ declared: “Richard Dunne congratulations The Best performance I have seen from any Irish centre half and that includes myself…”
