Damien Varley might have been a late call-up to the Irish squad in New Zealand to replace the injured Jerry Flannery, but he has settled in quickly on the evidence of this fine airport rendition of Christy Moore’s “Ordinary Man” this week.
The spirit in the Irish camp is clearly in good nick ahead of the final Pool C clash with Italy in Rotorua next weekend.
Munster hooker Varley even earned a few bob from a (possibly piss-taking) passerby/official, although we’re not sure whether Donnacha O’Callaghan was adding a note to the pile or attempting to pilfer this celebrity busker earnings.
And to think Trapattoni hurled Andy Reid out of the squad ad infinitum for some guitar-related escapades in Germany a few years ago…
