With a defence packed with young upstarts such as Phil Jones and Chris Smalling and no England call-up for international duty, could Rio Ferdinand head to the MLS?
According to the Daily Mail (bear with us a minute…), the 32-year-old could make the move, considering that he is out of contract at Old Trafford next summer and considering his age and competition, it is unlikely that United may offer a similar wage to his current £120,000-a-week pay packet.
On the other hand, favourable tax rates in Illnois mean that the MLS club Chicago Fire could offer an escape route that would involve similar wages to his Manchester United earnings.
With youngsters such as Phil Jones, Gary Cahill, Kyle Walker and Micah Richards on the plane for England’s games against Montenegro later this week, it’s looking unlikely for Rio, 33 next month, to cement his position for Euro 2012.
Having a failed legal battle last week revealed that Rio had been cheating on his missus for over a decade, perhaps she’d appreciate the change of scenery too.
