It’s that time of the week again – our countdown of the best five goals we’ve seen from around the world over the last few days.
5. Shola Ameobi (Newcastle v Tottenham Hotspur)
A draw was no less than Newcastle deserved in yesterday’s Premier League encounter and the side earned a late point with this stunning strike from Shola Ameobi.
4. Lukas Podolski (FC Köln vs Hannover 96)
The first of three free kicks in this week’s installment, this was the first strike from a rabid Lukas Podolski, who hit a brace to down sorry Hannover 96 in Sunday’s late Bundesliga fixture.
3. Robin van Persie (Arsenal v Sunderland)
Why doesn’t van Persie take all of Arsenal’s free kicks? Following a few wretched efforts from Alex Song and Theo Walcott, Arsenal’s captain stepped up and won his side all three points with this blistering free kick.
2. Sebastian Larsson (Arsenal v Sunderland)
Former Arsenal man Sebastian Larsson put Sunderland back in the game yesterday with the best set piece of the weekend; a completely unsavable shot that put his side level against the run of play. Arsenal should have had the game put away at this stage but Sunderland’s goal put them on the back foot for at least the next 30 minutes in the match.
1. Helder Postiga (Real Zaragoza v Real Sociedad)
Finally, any overhead kick is bound to end up within these pages and while Mario Balotelli’s strike against Aston Villa was impressive, nothing beats this specacular goal from Helder Postiga. Who said La Liga was boring outside the big two?
