Video: With goals like this, should Anthony Pilkington be in the Irish squad?

Creative midfielder with an eye for goal? Check. Eligible for Ireland? Check. Giovanni Trapattoni should be keeping a closer eye on Norwich’s Anthony Pilkington.

The Canaries midfielder struck his fourth goal of the season in the defeat to Aston Villa yesterday, curling a venomous free-kick past Shay Given into the top right hand corner even though the Irish ‘keeper was standing on that side.

23-year old Pilkington qualifies for Ireland through his paternal grandmother and has already represented the Boys in Green at under-21 level.

Given the dearth of creativity in the Irish midfield at present, Pilkington is certainly worth a shot, so if we can get past Estonia in the next week or so, the onus falls to Trapattoni and company to give him a call-up before the tournament in Poland and Ukraine next summer.

As Pilkington hasn’t represented Ireland at senior level, he is still eligible to represent England and such is his form for Norwich at present, there has been talk that he could be given a call up by Fabio Capello.

Time to get the finger out and act quick Trap.
