According to one insider, the Top Gear theme tune that we all know and love could very well have been changed if it wasn’t for the intervention of Jeremy Clarkson.
A good TV show must have a good catchy tune, so as you get through the boring opening credits and there is no opening tune that is quite as catchy as the riff from ‘Jessica’ by the Allman Brothers – or the Top Gear theme tune to you and me.
But things could have been a lot different if Jeremy Clarkson didn’t put his size 37-foot in the mix to stop things. Ok, so it might be a tad smaller, who knows.
According to Ian Morris (who once had the coolest job in the world going to studio-recordings of the shows and taking pictures for their website), while sifting through old files on his computer, he came across what could have been the new tune.
Apparently, the ‘new’ tune was envisioned for the show’s ‘refresh’ – which was around the time they got the Top Gear Dog, who didn’t last very long. It was to be more ‘modern’ then the original tune, with a techno style beat and silhouette caricatures for the three presenters.
We have to say, we’re glad the caricatures bit never went ahead, as Clarkson looks more like Morrissey thanks to a stupid-looking quiff.
Here is what Ian Morris had to say about the revised tune, “One of the production team told me that Clarkson exclaimed that it would make them (the presenters) look like idiots. He might have used more fruity language than that.
“Although I really like the updated theme, I think Clarkson was right to object. It is a little bit too electronic, and quite a lot un-Top Gear.”
