The plot, it gets thicker. It turns out that Fraizer Campbell, the Sunderland striker who was racially abused on Twitter by an Irish football supporter, could actually be eligible to join Trap’s Army for Euro 2012.
Campbell was the recipient of an offensive message by an Irish Twitter user who went by the name TheReid1, an account that has been deleted over the past 24 hours or so.
That tweet is being investigated by UK police – and it turns out that all Irish football supporters could be seeing a lot more of Campbell in the future.
David Meyler, the Cork man who’s making an impression at Sunderland following his return from a cruciate ligament tear, told his Twitter followers at the weekend that Campbell is eligible for Ireland.
The 24-year-old former Manchester United striker has represented England at U21 level in the past, but that will be no barrier to inclusion in the Ireland squad in the future, if Trap and the rest of his Italian crew see fit.
If Campbell does manage to force his way in, he’ll have to do a bit of grovelling to live down that three-lions-slapping picture above – never mind that he was cheering on Estonia on Friday.

However, it’s still a longer than long shot and time is not on his side, as two serious knee injuries have meant he’s started just three Premier League games in the past 18 months, and he’s still seen as some months away from a return to action.
