According to the newest version of the mental health bible known as the DMS V, shyness could be classed as a mental illness.
Experts are getting a tad worried that we’ll all be diagnosed with having a psychiatric disorder, as the newest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders gets closer to completion.
According to this magical little book, which seems to know you better than you know yourself, ‘conditions’ such as bereavement, internet addiction, gambling and eccentric behaviour could be classed as a mental illness.
Thankfully, physicians in Ireland and UK don’t currently use the manual, but many are fearful that it will have an affect on how people think about mental illnesses.
The new edition sounds so much like a load of drivel that 11,000 psychologists have signed a petition to try and stop it being published.
One of the many theories being passed around (by pot smoking hippies) is that the new ‘mental disorders’ being described in DSM V have been added so that the drug companies can reap loads of profits from new drugs that could possibly ‘cure’ shyness and the likes.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) publish a revised edition of the manual every couple of years and the DSM V isn’t expected to be on shelves until 2013.
Until then, you can check out the DSM V website where you will worry yourself to death after you self diagnose over 20 different ‘mental health issues’ after only an hour of searching.
