UFC star Ross ‘The Gladiator’ Pointon has stepped in as a late replacement to face hot Irish prospect John Michael Shiel in the Nation Basketball Arena, Tallaght on February 25.

Unbeaten Arklow native Shiel – who is known to many as JMS – is in line for arguably the fight of his career at Cage Contender XII. Under the guidance of Straight Blast Gym Ireland’s Dublin based maestro John Kavanagh, Shiel currently holds a perfect record of 6-0-0 storming to 5 out of his 6 wins by TKO and is seen by those in the know as the leading middleweight prospect working his way through the ranks currently in Ireland.

During his last outing at Cage Contender in 2011, he walked through fellow prospect John Redmond as if he wasn’t there. But will his explosive power and slick game be enough when he takes the step up to face The Gladiator?

Pointon is one of the best known Mix Martial Artists in Europe and has seen action at the very top level, having faced names like Mike Bisping and Rich Clementi along the way. Pointon was also a beaten finalist in the UFC’s reality series The Ultimate Fighter, gaining worldwide status for his skill and unorthodox methods. True to his Gladiator name, he is known for being willing to face any one, any time.
