Somebody broke onto a Glentoran supporters’ bus last night in Sligo and left a very unpleasant surprise for the visitors.
The Setanta Cup quarter-final first leg last night between Sligo Rovers and Glentoran passed off without too much incident on the pitch, with the Bit O’Red grabbing a two-goal lead to take with them into the away leg.
But something very unpleasant happened off the pitch. As is customary in the Setanta Cup, the visiting fans were bused inside the stadium, meaning the buses should have been in a secure area.
However, somebody or a group of people, managed to break into several of the buses and rob them of a few small items such as coats and keys. That would have been bad enough but whoever did the deed also decided to leave behind a memento, a piece of excrement, before smearing it all over the floor of one of the buses. Lovely.
For a competition that is all about helping to bring fans of different backgrounds together this is not ideal but you have to question the security around the Showgrounds too for allowing this to happen.
It certainly doesn’t paint the League of Ireland in a great light, even if those involved were not fans of Rovers and we pity the poor Glentoran fans who had to get on the bus for the drive back to Belfast.
The sh*t storm over this is only just beginning we suspect.
