After this week’s heroics at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea today managed to avoid the big guns in the Champions League quarter final draw and will face Benfica.
Roberto di Matteo/John Terry’s men will take on the side that helped knock Manchester United out of their Champions League group, while former boss Jose Mourinho got the easiest draw of the lot, as his Real Madrid will likely end the fairytale European run Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia have been enjoying.
If Chelsea defeat Benfica, however, they face the terrifying prospect of either Barcelona or Milan, as both sides will meet for the first time since playing one another in this season’s group stages. On the other side of the pot, an expected Real Madrid victory would mean that Mourinho’s men face either Bayern Munich or Marseille.
The full quarter-final line up announced this morning is as follows:
Real Madrid v APOEL
Marseille v Bayern Munich (winners to face one another)
Benfica v Chelsea
AC Milan v Barcelona (winners to face one another)
The first legs of the round are to be played on March 27-28 and the second legs will be played on April 3-4.
