You know how we all love the debate over who should play at 10 for Ireland? Well it’s going to continue as Ronan O’Gara says he plans to play on for at least two more years.
We all love Ronan O’Gara, not just for his on-field skills but also for his straight talking off it. The Munster out-half may be 35 but it sounds to us like he is getting a little bit sick of people asking him when he is going to quit.
In today’s Irish Examiner, O’Gara was pretty clear on his plans.
“I love playing for Munster; I love playing for Ireland. Anyone who knows me knows I’ll be the first to call retirement when my time is up. I can assure you my time ain’t up. In fact I have never felt better about my rugby. I’ve never worked harder and I am as committed as ever.
“I plan to play for my country until I’m 38 but definitely until I’m 37. Playing is what it is all about. To walk away would be to do myself a disservice. I’d be cheating myself because I know that I’m still good enough to start and win these games.
“Even calls for my retirement… what a joke given my record over the last few years. Being frank, I’m fitter now than I was five years ago.”
While this is great news for Ireland and Munster, putting the next Rugby World Cup in 2015 in range for ROG, you have to wonder what his rival for the Irish shirt, Jonny Sexton, will be thinking when he reads this.
