After suffering a backlash the likes of which the industry had never seen before following the ending of Mass Effect 3, developers BioWare have announced a new extended version of the game.

The controversial original ending, which led to a fan petition that raised over $80,000 for a children’s charity, caused widespread outrage among the series’ biggest fans for what was perceived to be a short-sighted and abrupt storytelling approach.

This afternoon, however, BioWare have said that they will release a free downloadable content pack to address such concerns. Titled ‘Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut‘, the download will be available for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers and will provide “additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes” to add to the original ending upon release at an unspecified date this summer.

“We are all incredibly proud of Mass Effect 3 and the work done by Casey Hudson and team,” said BioWare boss Ray Muzyka of the announcement. “Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding.

“With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team’s artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe.”
