Here we have another cool gadget that will not only make your life that little bit better – it also helps the environment too.
There’s no better feeling then doing what you love, all while knowing that you’re helping to save the polar bears. So that’s why JOE, along with the help of those clever clogs over at Electric Ireland, is bringing you an energy saving gadget every week.
This week we’re looking at the Gelert Wind Up and Solar Power Radio. The phrase ‘Batteries Not Included’, so often the reason for Christmas morning tears all those years ago, won’t prompt any man-blubbing here as this nifty little device will keep the tunes blaring even if you’re out of reach of a power supply.
The Gelert Wind Up and Solar Power Radio, or the GWUSPR for short – rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? – is the perfect companion for pretty much any activity that involves going outside. And listening to the radio. The integrated solar charging panel makes sure that the GWUSPR stays powered while you’re creosoting the fence. Or, if you’re a really modern man, soaking up the rays.
And before you cry foul, we know there hasn’t been a ray of sunlight in Ireland since autumn of 1974. But there’s no need to worry, as the GWUSPR has a cool trick up its sleeve.
If you do so happen to live somewhere that is somewhat lacking in sunlight, then you can just crack out the GWUSPR’s compact folding winding handle. With just a little bit of elbow grease you’ll be listening to George Hook ranting and raving in no time. Although you probably won’t want to.

The perfect gadget for the outdoorsman
So how long exactly does the solar charge last before it kicks the bucket? Well, the radio doesn’t run off batteries, or any type of mains, but you’d be surprised how long its life can be. Five hours of sunlight delivers a decent 40 minutes of listening in the dark. Alternatively, one minute of winding away delivers approximately 20 minutes of listening. So we’re guessing if you slugged some high-caffein energy drink and then had a go at it, a spot of winding could probably give you a full day of power. Probably.
The GWUSPR also features a collapsible aerial so that you can search around for a better signal, and it also has a headphone output socket, just in case you want to keep the tunes all to yourself.
Another great feature of this particular energy-saving gadget is the fact that it’s rain resistant, so you won’t have to worry if it’s p*ssing rain. (Did we say if it’s raining? Ha…)
The GWUSPR plays AM, FM and WB radio and currently retails at just €20.32. It’s definitely a must have for the retro-loving outdoor music nerd. Or anyone who might be looking to cut their energy bills in any way. Every little helps and all that.
