A new treatment aimed to cure prostate cancer has given new hope for tens of thousands of men as it gives ‘perfect results’ in early trials.

Prostate cancer is the silent killer of men the world over. It’s like a sword wielding ninja or worse, a Yoda from the Dark Side. We’d safely bet that you yourself know someone who has been affected by prostate cancer in some way or shape. Well there’s good news today, because scientists in London believe they’re on the verge to finally cracking the cancerous code once and for all.

Their study found that using a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) not only gets rid of the cancer after twelve months of treatment, it also leaves the patient with no major side effects – unlike conventional treatments. So far trials have been quite successful with nine out of ten cases being cured.

This is in contrast to conventional treatments, which only see a ‘perfect outcome’ in half of cases. The researchers hope they can roll out the treatment into large-scale trials soon enough.

The study followed 41 men who were treated by HIFU. After 12 months, 95 per cent of the patients were cancer free, none were incontinent and only one in ten suffered impotence, reports the Irish Independent.

Dr Hashim Ahmed who led the study, said, “Our results are very encouraging. We’re optimistic that men diagnosed with prostate cancer may soon be able to undergo a day case surgical procedure, which can be safely repeated once or twice, to treat their condition with very few side-effects. That could mean a significant improvement in their quality of life.”
