The Four-Timer: Weekend bets

Our quartet of sports bets this weekend could return €240, enough for a good long weekend with plenty of change left over.

Our quartet of sports bets this weekend could return €240, enough for a good long weekend with plenty of change left over.

Chelsea v Liverpool, FA Cup Final: Liverpool to beat Chelsea @ 2/1 (90 minutes only)

Gambling on Liverpool this season is a precarious business indeed, unless it’s part of a multiple draw bet when they’re playing at home because they’ve become almost a dead cert in that regard.

The Cups, however, have told a different story and winning the oldest one in football could provide redemption for what has been a pretty shoddy season overall.

Liverpool will be putting all their chips on the table for this one, while Chelsea still have a bigger prize to play for a little down the road. For that reason, we think the Reds just might do it at Wembley, even though the fairly generous odds could be slightly affecting our judgement.

San Antonio Spurs v Utah Jazz, NBA Play-Offs: San Antonio Spurs (-6) to win @ 10/11

The NBA play-offs are now well under way and while injuries to big names like Derrick Rose have dominated the early proceedings, the teams that are going to be around in the end have been quietly doing the business.

The San Antonio Spurs won the Western Conference, despite being packed with players the wrong side of 30. Yet Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker (only 29 but he looks much older and has been in the NBA for a decade) have been playing better than ever.

They lead the Jazz 2-0 after two games in Texas and they will want this series over early to rest those valuable old limbs. They should win, and by more than six as the other two were massive Spurs blowouts.

Dublin v Roscommon, All-Ireland Under-21 Final: Dublin (-5) to win @ 6/5

We’re sure there are plenty of Rossies out there availing of the very generous 9/2 odds, but rarely has there been as much hype about an underage team (even one from Dublin) and it would appear to be justified in this case.

Nigel Dineen’s men were incredibly stingy against Cavan in the semi-final when conceding only four scores and they’ll need to be as tight-fisted as some Cavan people are believed to be against a Dubs side that have scored 11-75 in five games to date.

It’s that sort of firepower that we believe will win Dublin the game, and with a little bit to spare too.

National League Hurling Final, Cork v Kilkenny: Either team to win by 1-4 points or draw @ 10/11

Sunday might not yet totally prove whether Cork can be mentioned alongside Kilkenny and Tipp as All-Ireland contenders after their resurgence under JBM, but it will give us a fairly good idea nonetheless.

Kilkenny will be favourites and rightly so, but the loss of Richie Power – who scored 3-49 in the league and 1-11 against Cork alone – should not be underestimated. Donal Óg’s absence is a similar blow for the Rebels, but will probably not affect them as much as Power’s loss will the Cats.

Whatever happens, we think there won’t be much between them in the end in a game that could be replicated later in the summer.
