Smokers are being urged today to use the social networking site Twitter to help them kick the habit.

Did you know that today is World ‘No Tobacco’ day, and the Irish Heart Foundation and Pfizer Healthcare have launched the hash tag #qweetwithhelp campaign. That’s Qweet With Help – see what they done?

Instead of reaching for a stick of the finest Virginia slim, the Irish Heart Foundation and Pfizer want you smokers to reach for your smartphone and tweet for some kind words of assistance in getting your mind off the cancer sticks.

It’s not just an excuse for the Irish Heart Foundation and Pfizer to get their names out there. For your troubles, €1 will be donated to the Irish Heart Foundation – presumably by Pfizer – every time a tweet is tagged with the “Qweet With Help” hash tag.

The ‘Qweet With Help’ campaign comes as it’s reported that Irish teens are the youngest smokers in Europe with most taking their first puff at 16.4 years old, compared with an EU average of 17.6.

Us Irish enjoy our cigs more than out European neighbours according to the Eurobarometer survey of Europe’s relationship with tobacco. The survey found that around 29 per cent of adults here still smoke, compared with an EU average of 28 per cent, while the average Irish smoker gets through roughly 16 cigarettes a day compared with an EU average of 14.2.

So, if you get the cravings, why not head over to Twitter instead and don’t forget the hash tag #qweetwithhelp.
