Until tonight, we had no idea that a Ubisoft Montreal game called Watch Dogs even existed. Now it may have already blown away the opposition at the video game industry’s biggest event.

Announced at the end of Ubisoft’s E3 press conference tonight, the open-world hacking title boasts incredible graphics, unique gameplay and stunning production values unheard of in new video game IPs.

If anything, the rapturous reception it received tonight is testament to the collective nagging feeling that the video game industry was no willing to take risks on new concepts. With Watch Dogs – or perhaps ‘Watch_Dogs‘, we are unclear as yet – we have a game that recalled echoes of everything from Deus Ex to even Heavy Rain.

Watch Dogs goes beyond the limits of today’s open-world games by giving players the ability to control an entire city,” said creative director Jonathan Morin of the game tonight.

“In Watch Dogs, anything connected to the city’s Central Operating System becomes a weapon. By pushing the boundaries, we can provide players with action and access to information on a scale that’s never been seen in a video game before.”

Above is the nine-minute gameplay demo that closed out the Ubisoft show – it’s something we don’t want to spoil so have a watch and try to resist having your mind blown. We’ve also included the first non-gameplay trailer below, which preceded the demo.

Is it too early to call Watch Dogs the game of E3 2012? Let’s hope that Nintendo and Sony have plenty of tricks up their sleeves for their forthcoming press conferences, though our minds may already have been made up – even if we have our suspicions that we might be looking at the first game from the next generation of consoles.
