Just bought yourself a spanking new Nintendo 3DS? Then you may want to look away now, as the Japanese giants have just announced a new, ginormous version of the handheld.
Rather than announcing the Nintendo 3DS XL hardware revision at their disappointing E3 press conference this month, Nintendo instead went with a Nintendo Direct live feed announcement that was broadcast at 5am this morning. Makes sense…
The new console will feature 90 per cent bigger screens, increasing the 3D top screen from 3.58 inches to 4.88 inches and enlarging the lower touch screen from 3.02 inches to 4.18 inches.
Overall, the XL is 46 per cent larger than the regular 3DS – see below for proof:
Perhaps the biggest surprise, however, regarding today’s anouncement is that the XL does not feature a second analogue stick – a problem which Nintendo “fixed” with the cumbersome Circle Pad Pro add-on released earlier this year. In other words, when the likes of Monster Hunter Tri 3D hit the console, they’ll need to release a new, bigger Circle Pad. Hmm…
Aside from its larger size, the XL features better battery life and will come in four colours – white, red, blue and black. No pricing details have yet been announced though in what presumably a cost-saving exercise, the console will not be boxed with an AC adapter.
