We were already excited about the Olympic sprints but Johan Blake’s defeat of Usain Bolt over 200m last night really sets up London perfectly.

A few days back we brought you the footage of Yohan Blake beating Usain Bolt in the 100m final of the Jamaican Olympic trial. That win was only a minor surprise as Blake has been snapping at Bolt’s heels for a while now, especially over the shorter distance, but we are still not accustomed to see Bolt lose.

So, in last night’s 200m final, we expected that Bolt would want to stamp his authority and quell the young upstart. The world record holder may have wanted to, but he couldn’t.

Blake ran him down and Bolt could not overtake him in the final stretch, with Blake clocking a time of 19.80, 0.03 faster than his training partner Bolt.

The double Olympic champion has always considered the 200m a better race for him but now he has to face the reality that Blake may have the measure of him in both disciplines.

Perhaps Bolt is timing his form to peak when it matters; London. There are just 33 days to go until the 100m heats start so we will soon know.
