There is no better place than Twitter for rumours to fly around but when the rumour gets reported as fact, that’s when things can get nasty, especially if the rumour is not true.
Anyone who was on the social network over the weekend probably saw the story going around that following his side’s 4-0 thumping at the hands of arch-rivals Bohs, Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Kenny was about to get the chop.
Like all rumours it was plausible and was widely circulated, adding further credence to the tale. The problem Stephen Kenny has is that the rumour was also tweeted by RTE’s flagship Irish soccer show MNS. They then followed this up with a discussion on the show in which pundit Richie Sadlier said that Kenny “should not really remain in that job much longer”.
Today Kenny has taken to the Irish Daily Star to have a lash at RTE and Sadlier. Kenny goes for the station first, saying that “After the Sean Gallagher affair, RTE said they would have a new code of conduct on tweets. They said they would verify all information before they tweeted it out.”
Kenny is referring to the Presidential Debate when a tweet Front Line said was from an official Martin McGuinness campaign account made claims against Gallagher. The account turned out to be not associated with McGuinness.
In fairness to MNS they did state in their tweet that they were waiting for clarification on Kenny’s status and they later clarified that the rumours were false.
Kenny wasn’t done there, also turning his ire on Sadlier. Kenny responds to the accusation that he should leave Rovers by saying that he thinks Sadlier’s comments “were drastic” adding “I just think for someone who was a chief executive, they wasted millions and won nothing.”
That’s a reference to Sadlier’s time as St Pat’s CEO a few years ago.
Kenny goes on to say that he accepts that he made mistakes in the 4-0 thumping but that it is “time to move on”. Indeed it is, just not in the way that was rumoured over the weekend.
