If Shamrock Rovers can get past Ekranas next week they will face Anderlecht in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.
It’s Friday, it’s July, so that means that we are due a European football draw. The lads in Nyon were pulling the balls out of the bowls again today and they have served up a very tasty tie for Irish champs Shamrock Rovers.
Stephen Kenny’s men head to Lithunia next week with their tie with Ekranas carefully poised at 0-0. But the incentive for the Hoops is that they will be facing Belgian giants Anderlecht if they get through to the third qualifying round.
It’s a tough draw for Rovers but also a potential money spinner, from both ticket sales and TV revenue.
Elsewhere, Celtic will play either HJK Helsinki or KR Reykjavik while Motherwell will face Greek champs Panathinaikos.
In the Europa League, if Sligo Rovers can overcome a 3-1 defeat to Spartak Trnava they will play Steaua Bucharest next while St Pat’s, who are in a good position to progress past Siroki Brijeg after drawing the away leg 1-1, will face German side Hannover 96.
As for Liverpool, the Reds will play either FK Renova of Macedonia or FC Gomel of Belarus in round three.
