Look closely and you’ll spot an offensive Irish reference but apart from that it’s a pretty impressive effort.
To the disappointment of hardcore fans of the show, The Simpsons seem to be putting more effort into couch gags and references to other popular television shows than into their own content these days.
On the flip side, it has led to some impressive parodies of the likes of Breaking Bad, Homeland and the sensational opening sequence for the most recent Treehouse of Horror episode by Guillermo Del Toro.
The Hobbit is the latest to feature in an elaborate Simpsons couch gag sequence, featuring a whole host of characters from the show, including a particularly funny reference to Moe as Gollum, while anyone familiar with either Tolkien’s book or Peter Jackson’s film won’t take long to work out who plays the role of Smaug the dragon.
Fans of The Hobbit and The Simpsons will appreciate the references and the work that went into it, but we’d prefer to be celebrating the content of the episodes themselves, which fans don’t do as frequently these days as they did during the show’s glory years.
