One of the simplest ways to stop an intruder from barging past you or your family is to install a door chain. It’s simple to do and it gives you peace of mind when you’re not there.

Door chains might not look like much but they can prevent intruders from barging past the smaller/weaker members of your family, and if the burglar does manage to pick your front door’s lock, then he’ll have a challenge undoing the door chain. Here’s how to fit one in just five minutes.

What you’ll need:

Door chain and catch
Screwdriver
Drill bit
Eye protection

What to do:

Step 1: Mark your door

First things first, mark out where exactly you want the door chain to sit. It’s best to put it close enough to the lock as this is the strongest part of the door, however, you might want to take into consideration the average height of your family. It’s just a thought though… Make sure you have the door chain plate flush with the door itself. You might need to do some light chiselling if it’s not.

Step 2: Get drilling

Once you’re happy with the position of your door chain you can begin on actually securing it to the doorframe. Firstly, drill the holes you’ve already marked out and then screw the door chain into position.

Step 3: There’s always a catch…

Once the chain is securely in place you can secure the catch to the door. Just like Step 1, simply mark out where you want the holes to go, using the catch itself as a guide. Once this is done, both the chain and the catch should be in place and ready for a test run.

That’s all you have to do to add a little bit of extra security to your home.
