Here’s a look at what the future of automotive racing could look like if we let the robots take over. Lets not let that happen, please.

This is easily one of the cooler college projects we’ve seen in a long time, as it’s an autonomous Audi TTS. Basically, it’s a robotically controlled supercar. The car is the brainchild of Stanford University’s engineering faculty and it’s designed to handle racetracks – specifically, California’s Thunderhill Raceway

The car has been lovingly named Shelly and she uses GPS to calculate where she is in relation to the track. She can also go quite fast, as you’ll see in the video above. But why would we want a car that can drive itself? Well, apart from just ‘showing off’, the guys at Stanford are actually doing wonders for the future of car safety.

The engineers behind Shelly hope that the car’s computer brain could step in and save the day whenever the human brain controlling the car switches off.

One thing is for sure, we just hope they don’t create 20 of these and then stick them on a track without any humans behind the wheel. Where would the fun in that be? Sure you might as well just play Scalextric.
