The Friday Flutters: Camelot, Sunderland and the Springboks

Ahead of the weekend’s sporting action, here’s three bets, of varying likelihood, that we think could be worth a punt.

Ahead of the weekend’s sporting action, here’s three bets, of varying likelihood, that we think could be worth a punt.

With a vast range of sport on every weekend, it can be hard to know where to punt your hard earned euros. So, to help you on your way, here are three bets we like the look of this weekend. One is as near as we can find to a sure thing, one is a mid-range bet and one is a long shot. If the treble comes in it will net you around 34/1 but if we were that good at betting, we wouldn’t be here etc…

Camelot to win the St Leger, 4/11

The amazing Camelot faces eight opponents in Saturday’s St Leger at Doncaster but his nearest foe in the betting market, Main Sequence, is currently priced at 15/2. In short, Aidan O’Brien’s charge is a near dead cert to win the race and become the first horse since Nijinsky in 1970 to win the Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Derby, St Leger).

The potential for that historic achievement has seen money pour in for Camelot but the unbeaten colt would still be odds on based on his ability and the horses he has to beat. It is unthinkable that Joseph O’Brien won’t get the win aboard the favourite, even if it is the longest trip of his short, and brilliant, career.

Sunderland to beat Liverpool, 9/4

If this game was at Anfield, after the week we have witnessed in Liverpool, there is no way you could back against the Reds. But it is being played in Sunderland, and it is the Black Cats’ first home game of the season, so the Stadium of Light should be rocking.

Sunderland had the fourth best home defence in the Premier League last term and with Liverpool still woefully underpowered up front, it is hard to see Brendan Rodgers’ men scoring this weekend. Add in Steven Fletcher’s goalscoring start to life at Sunderland and we can see this game going the way of Martin O’Neill’s side, without the help of a beach ball this time.

South Africa to beat New Zealand, 7/1

Okay, we know this looks crazy but bear with us. The All Blacks were far from impressive in last week’s win over Argentina. Dan Carter is still out and Piri Weepu starts. The Springboks had the Aussies beaten last week and threw it away late on. Of all sides, South Africa won’t fear the world champs and this is the first game in the brand new Forsyth Barr Stadium for either side.

Still not convinced? We admit it is a long shot but that’s the idea, remember? The All Blacks have looked the class act of the first ever Rugby Championship campaign but at 7/1, there is just enough wiggle room for this to be worth a cheeky tenner.
