There are a few people who have questioned Ricky Hatton’s decision to return to boxing, not least his Dad, who reportedly attacked him in a gym car park earlier this week.

According to today’s Irish Sun, Ricky’s Dad Ray was arrested in Manchester on Thursday morning after attacking his son outside a gym having apparently confronted him over his decision to return to the ring and his lifestyle ever since his original retirement in July, 2011.

Prior to that, Hatton had entered rehab to deal with problems arising from depression and drink and drugs abuse and he was also well known for, eh, ‘letting himself go’ in between fights, habit which prompted the nickname ‘Ricky Fatton’.

Hatton and his father are believed to have a tempestuous relationship and it seemingly all came to a head on Thursday morning.

“Ricky and his Dad haven’t really talked for two years,” an eyewitness told the Irish Sun.

“Ray isn’t happy about Ricky’s lifestyle. Ray had gone to confront his son. There was a dispute in the car park seen by quite a few people. Ray took a swipe at him.”

The police were called and subsequently arrested the 61-year old on suspicion of assault. He was then taken to a police station, cautioned and released. The Sun says that a friend of Ricky’s has claimed that he is intent on pressing charges.

When he announced his comeback Ricky knew he’d be in for some tough fights… he probably didn’t expect one so soon, however.
