Rarely will we get a week with as many quality Champions League goals as we’ve seen over the past two evenings. Here are our five favourites.

5. Robin van Persie, Manchester United v CFR Cluj

It doesn’t look like much on first viewing, but look at it again and drool over the magnificently subtle touch by Van Persie to guide Wayne Rooney’s floated through ball beyond the Cluj ‘keeper and into the net.

4. James Rodriguez, Porto v PSG

How about these tekkers? Rodriguez’s finish was magnificent in its own right, but the way he arced his body to enable him to hit it like that in the first place was different class. It’s no wonder he’s highly coveted throughout Europe.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid v Ajax

It was a toss of a coin between his second from outside of the box and this one, the goal that sealed his hat-trick, but we loved the cheeky chipped finish after an exquisite first touch to guide the ball into his path. Just the 158 goals in 154 games for Cristiano now; we always said he was overrated.

2. Karim Benzema, Real Madrid v Ajax

Ronaldo won’t like it, but even though he scored a hat-trick including the cracker above, his thunder was well and truly stolen by his French team-mate, who thundered home this cracking scissors kick from a Kaka cross. Pick that one out.

1. Eliseu, Malaga v Anderlecht

It might be hard to believe that there was a goal better than Benzema’s last night, but have a look at this belter of a strike from Malaga’s Eliseu last night and try and disagree with us. We know Hulk hits the ball hard, but even he would have been proud of this effort, a once in a lifetime-type hit from the sometime Portuguese international.
