Pass the mic; Five of the best post-game interviews of all time

Seattle’s Richard Sherman gave an epic post-game interview last night but there have been a few crackers over the years. Here’s some of our favourites.

Post-match/game/fight interviews should be great. With adrenaline pumping, it is the best chance interviewers have of getting some real truth out of sports men and women. Sadly, most pros are too professional these days to let their real emotions come out so we usually get a bland stream of cliches and platitudes to endure before they shuffle off for a shower.

Last night, Seattle Seahawks corner back Richard Sherman broke from tradition and went full WWE style in his post-game chat, calling out opponents while also proclaiming his own greatness. It was rare, and fantastic. And it got us thinking of other great post-game chats we’ve seen. Some are almost as unhinged as Sherman’s, some are just stuffed with raw emotion and some are a combination of both. Enjoy.

Kevin Keegan

The daddy of post-game interviews. Keegan’s meltdown in the face of Manchester United’s relentless pursuit of Newcastle during the 1995-96 season became an instant classic, confirmed the power of  Alex Ferguson’s ‘mind games’ for all time and is still quoted all the time. Love it!

Floyd Mayweather

After his very controversial KO of Victor Ortiz in 2011, ‘Money’ faced HBO’s veteran broadcaster Larry Merchant for his post-fight chat. It starts out politely enough but at around the 2.00 mark Floyd loses it with Merchant, who doesn’t back down from the in-your-face antics of Mayweather. We award this one to Larry on points.

Shane Curran

After helping St Brigid’s to All-Ireland club glory at Croke Park, goalkeeping legend Shane Curran gave one of the most heartfelt post-match interviews we’ve ever seen. Beautiful.

Liam Brady

During his ill-fated spell in charge of Brighton, the Irish legend wasn’t too happy to be cornered by the media after a draw with lowly Canvey Island in the FA Cup. Cue one of the best answers ever given to end a post-match interview from Chippy.

Brendan Venter

The Saracens coach was really not in the mood for this post-match interview after defeat to Racing Metro so he channelled Mike Bassett: England Manager. As you do…
