Katie Taylor has stated that she will stay amateur in an interview to the Ray D’Arcy Show on Today Fm.
Taylor was definitive in her answer to the popular radio presenter D’Arcy this morning, “Boxing for my country, there’s nothing better than that and bringing home medals for my country,” she said before adding, “I’m going to stay amateur and hopefully I’ll defend my title in Rio in four years time.”
This statement today was very definitive, although it remains to be seen if Katie has concluded negotiations surrounding her Irish sports council grant.
This latest declaration by Ireland’s gold medallist boxer follows on from her statements in recent weeks saying she desired to continue on as an amateur. Speaking to JOE last week in this interview she was adamant she wanted to fight in Rio 2016 and spoke about her love for the amateur code in boxing.
Taylor could have earned a six-figure contract had she availed of offers of a professional contract from the US from promoters like Oscar de la Hoya, or here with Brian Peters.
It now looks like Ireland will be cheering Katie on to gold in 2016.
