Not exactly a vintage week for spectacular Champions League goals, but there are a few beauts in there from the likes of Siem De Jong, Andres Iniesta and Porto’s Silvestre Varela.

5. Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund v Real Madrid)

Goals that bounce all the way into the net aren’t always the most pleasing on the eye, but Schmelzer showed quite brilliant technique to get above the ball and hit it powerfully towards goal and it had to go through quite a lot of bodies before nestling in the bottom corner.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund)

Ronny makes his customary appearance in this feature for his equaliser against Dortmund last night and although he has scored better goals, the main reason for the inclusion of this entry is the pitch-perfect pass from Mesut Ozil to set him up. Ronaldo still had a fair bit to do afterwards, but the ‘keeper all but made up his mind for him by needlessly rushing out.

3. Siem De Jong (Ajax v Manchester City)

De Jong led the line exceptionally well for the Dutch side against City last night and his equalising goal before half-time was just reward for his efforts. Hitting a moving ball while running at that speed is pretty difficult but De Jong made it look easy. Excellent strike.

2. Andres Iniesta (Barcelona v Celtic)

The Hoops were terribly unlucky not to come away from the Nou Camp with at least a point to show for their efforts, but it is a testament to how well they defended that Barca had to score a goal as good as this one to break the deadlock. Messi, Xavi and Iniesta were all involved in a move of frightening pace and movement; it was Barca at their very best.

1. Silvestre Varela (Porto v Dynamo Kiev)

Goal of the week goes to Porto’s Silvestre Varela and although Hulk has since left, he obviously passed on a few tips to his colleagues about how to hit the ball ridiculously hard while he was at the club. This one was a ‘now you see it, now you don’t’ effort from the Portuguese international, who gave the keeper absolutely no chance of keeping it out.
