With Rob Kearney now ruled out there is a lack of cover at full-back, with Tommy Bowe’s selection at full-back for Ulster a clear indicator that Kidney wants to look at all his options.

The Lions player played schools rugby in this position, but has played primarily at wing, or occasionally centre, since. All the more surprising given that Jared Payne has been perhaps Ulster’s player of the season thus far and drops to the bench.

Declan Fitzpatrick has been chosen ahead of John Afoa which will give the Ulster prop a chance to impress despite being left out of the initial 31 man squad.

In Munster, Rob Penney has given Felix Jones his first start of the season in a timely boost for Kidney where an impressive performance may see him promoted to the squad.

Peter O’Mahony has started at number 8 all season for Penney but has been selected at openside for the trip to Zebre and looks set to battle with Chris Henry for the number seven jersey with Sean O’Brien out injured.

Joe Schmidt’s selection for Leinster would also have pleased Kidney and the management team. Richardt Strauss continues at hooker with Brian O’Driscoll and Gordon D’Arcy continuing their midfield partnership, with Fergus McFadden selected on the left wing.

The provincial coaches may have rested some of the afore mentioned players or selected them in different positions, but the IRFU mantra dictates a policy that is best for the international side.

It will be an interesting weekend as player combinations and performances will be under even more scrutiny.
