One of the greatest National Hunt horses we ever saw, Kauto Star, retired today so here’s his greatest victory.
It’s a sad day for racing as one of the greats of the game, Kauto Star, was retired today by trainer Paul Nicholls. It’s not really a surprise to any followers of the sport, especially after a lacklustre showing in the Cheltenham Gold Cup earlier this year.
But after a career that saw him take two Gold Cups, five King Georges and a host of other top class races it is hard to pick his best ever win. Beating his great rival, and stablemate, Denman in the 2009 Gold Cup, to regain his crown was epic but we have gone for his final big win and the last of his five King Georges.
With Ruby Walsh aboard, and with the hopes of most racing fans behind him, we wondered could the old stager pull out some of his old form one last time. He did, leaving Long Run and a host of class horses trailing in his wake last December in Kempton.
He’ll be missed but we wish him a long and happy retirement.
