In a new development to the saga, New Zealand media this weekend reported that talks had taken place between disgruntled English and French representatives and their South African counterparts to discuss the possibility of a breakaway league.

ERC Chief Executive Derek McGrath said last night that he was aware of these discussions, but was still confident that the current agreement would be extended by the current participants.

The Irish Examiner also states that SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters is also aware of the preliminary meetings, but does not feel the South African sides would want to pull out of Super Rugby.

“I’m aware some English clubs have been talking to South African franchises,” Peters said, “but we have no indication the South Africans want to go down that route.”

Another twist to what has been a lengthy saga.
