The 14/1 Green Moon won the Melbourne Cup in a pulsating finish to “the race that stops the nation.”

The richest two-mile handicap race in the world was won by the Irish-bred, formerly British-trained horse  and gave jockey Brett Prebble and trainer Robert Hickmott their first Emirates Melbourne Cup win and a near €5million prize.

The 14/1 shot was followed up by Fiorente (66/1) in second and Jakkalberry (80/1) ridden by Cork jockey Colm O’Donoghue, in third while fourth place was taken by Kelinni (18/1).

The foreign-trained horses didn’t fare too well, with Irish trainer Dermot Weld’s Galileo’s Choice going strong early on under jockey Pat Smullen but weakening to finish in 20th place.

The Melbourne Cup is one of the most talked about races in the world and is declared a holiday in the Melbourne area.
