The Heineken Cup celebrated its 17th birthday recently so we decided to ask four people who have witnessed it all for their most memorable Heineken Cup moments. Now it’s up to you to vote for the moment that will be crowned best of the best.
With over 1,200 games and nearly 6,000 tries in the books, there is a lot of history to look back on over the 17 years of the Heineken Cup. But how do you select the best, the very best, moment over all that time?
Well, Heineken.ie decided the best people to talk to are the lads who have probably seen more Heineken Cup games than anyone else on Earth. We locked George Hook, Brent Pope, Donal Lenihan and Peter O’Reilly in a room and refused to let them out until they picked their favourite moment from Europe’s premier rugby competition.
The lads selections are below but the title of best ever Heineken Cup moment will be selected by you. All you have to do is vote in the poll at the bottom of the page. The winner will be announced on Friday.
Brent Pope
The 2006 final, Munster v Biarritz, I was there and the atmosphere was incredible. It has to be the moment Peter Stringer fooled everyone with that try.
Donal Lenihan
The 2004 final, right at the death, the moment Rob Howley manufactures a try for Wasps to beat Toulouse. Pure class.
George Hook
January 2003, The Miracle Match. Munster needed to win by 27 points and score four tries to remain in the Heineken Cup. They did it the moment when John Kelly touched down, beating Gloucester 33-6. That match is what the Heineken Cup is all about.
Peter O’Reilly
Denis Hickie’s try against Toulouse in the 2006 quarter-final; Leinster out-Toulousing Toulouse on their own patch. The moment Contepomi moved the ball from deep, D’Arcy and Hickie doing the rest .
